From household maintenance to commercial gardening, ride-on mowers can really make landscaping a breeze. However, much like any vehicle or piece of machinery, mowers also need regular servicing to perform at their best. So, if you’re not sure when to get yours serviced or simply need a little further info, we’ve created a quick maintenance guide.
Our general recommendation is to service your equipment once a year or every 100 hours, and check your engine oil regularly (only use genuine engine oil, available in all of our stores). Of course, the interval required also depends on how much you use the mower, as well as its age, type, and many other factors that we’ll go on to cover below.
Getting your ride-on mower serviced is important for several different reasons. To start, it extends the life of your mower and ensures the machine operates efficiently, which means your lawn will be cut cleanly and evenly. A poorly maintained mower will not last as long and tends to tear grass rather than cutting it.
Servicing also protects the overall condition of the machine. This is all the more important given that ride-on mowers are usually a long-term investment, especially when you’re purchasing from leading brands like Gravely, Victa, Husqvarna, Masport, Cox, Greenworks, and BWM Products.
A well-serviced mower is significantly more safe to operate and handle. Mowers have many moving parts, and if any of these parts fail, there are natural risks that come with it. For example, a frayed belt could snap while the mower is in use, or a dull blade might cause the mower to overheat.
In many cases, your ride-on mower’s warranty may have a clause that requires you to get it serviced once a year, or within another recommended window. Let’s use Husqvarna as an example.
As it states on their website “Condition of 5 year /6000hr warranty- Automower® must be serviced as per the schedules outlined in the owner’s manual or annually (whichever comes first) at an Authorised Husqvarna Dealer, product must not exceed manufacturer’s recommended working area.” (Source: Husqvarna Warranty Policy)
So, always check the manual of your ride-on mower to find out more! Of course, if you’re still unsure, make sure to contact us and book in a service.
Whether it’s battery-powered or running off petrol, a ride-on mower service typically involves a thorough inspection and maintenance of the mower’s key components. Depending on the type of service, the tasks involved can vary significantly.
Let’s explore what both a minor and major service of a ride-on mower typically looks like–please note that the following details may not apply to every make or model.
A minor service is often sufficient for a mower that is still relatively new or hasn’t been used extensively. It generally includes:
Changing the Engine Oil and Oil Filter: Regular oil changes are crucial to keep the engine lubricated and running smoothly.
Checking and Cleaning the Air Filter: A clogged air filter can cause the engine to run poorly or even fail to start. Cleaning or replacing the air filter ensures that the engine receives the clean air it needs to operate efficiently.
Sharpening or Replacing the Blades: Sharpening the blades keeps them in optimal condition, while replacement may be necessary if they’re excessively worn or damaged.
Replacing the Spark Plug: The spark plug ignites the fuel-air mixture in the engine. Replacing the spark plug ensures reliable engine starts and efficient operation.
Checking the Battery, Fuel System, and Belts: Belts are checked for signs of wear and proper tension to ensure the mower runs smoothly.
Lubricating Moving Parts: Proper lubrication of moving parts, such as wheel bearings and steering mechanisms, reduces friction and prevents premature wear.
A major service is more comprehensive and is typically recommended for older mowers or those that have seen extensive use. It includes all the same steps of a minor service, plus additional tasks that may include:
Servicing the Carburetor: Your mower engine becomes dirty from the grass, twigs, and debris the blade kicks up. The debris winds up inside the carburetor. This can cause clogged fuel and air passages, leading to increased erratic idling and running, hard or no starts, won’t stay running, a decrease in power, and an increase in fuel consumption.
Adjusting the Throttle: If necessary, adjustments are made to ensure that the engine runs smoothly at all speeds. This can improve both the performance and fuel efficiency of the mower.
Checking and Replacing the Fuel Filter: The fuel filter prevents dirt and debris from entering the fuel system. Replacing the fuel filter as part of a major service keeps the fuel system clean and running smoothly.
Inspecting and Adjusting the Cutting Deck Alignment: The cutting deck needs to be aligned correctly to ensure an even cut. Adjusting the deck alignment improves the mower’s cutting performance.
Checking the Electrical System: This includes inspecting the battery, starter, and wiring for any issues.
Detailed Inspection of the Drive System: The drive system, including the belts and pulleys, is thoroughly checked for wear and proper operation. Any issues here can lead to reduced performance or even mechanical failure, so this is a critical part of the service.

The type of mower you own plays a significant role in how often it should be serviced, as well as the specific maintenance tasks required.
Battery-powered mowers, such as those manufactured by Victa, Greenworks, Stihl and Gravely, , are becoming increasingly popular due to their environmental benefits and general ease of use.
These mowers typically require less frequent maintenance than petrol mowers because they don’t have as many moving parts or internal combustion engines. However, they still need regular attention in the following areas:
Battery Health: The battery is the heart of a battery-powered mower. Regularly check the battery’s charge and overall health. Over time, batteries can lose their ability to hold a charge, which may require replacement. Keeping the battery clean and stored correctly when not in use can also extend its life.
Electrical Connections: Ensure that all electrical connections are clean and secure. Loose or corroded connections can lead to poor performance or failure to start.
Blade Maintenance: Just like petrol mowers, the blades on a battery-powered mower need to be kept sharp for optimal cutting performance. Regular cleaning of the cutting deck is also necessary to prevent grass buildup and rust.
Petrol mowers, like those offered by Husqvarna, Gravely, and Cox, require more frequent servicing due to the complexity of their internal combustion engines. Here, a service may involve the following aspects:
Engine Oil: Regularly check and change the engine oil to keep the engine running smoothly. Old or low oil levels can cause the engine to overheat or even seize.
Spark Plugs and Air Filters: These components need to be inspected and replaced more frequently in petrol mowers. A dirty air filter can choke the engine, while a worn spark plug can make it difficult to start the mower.
Fuel System: Check the fuel filter, fuel lines, and carburetor regularly to ensure they’re clean and functioning properly. Blockages or leaks can cause poor performance or even damage the engine.
Yes, there are several maintenance tasks that you can perform yourself to keep your ride-on mower in good working order between professional services.
Check the Oil: Regularly check the oil level before each use, especially if you have a petrol mower.
Clean the Deck: After every use, it’s a good habit to clean the cutting deck.
Sharpen the Blades: Sharpen the blades regularly or replace them if they’re nicked, bent, or worn down.
Inspect the Battery: Check the battery’s charge level and condition. If the battery shows signs of losing its ability to hold a charge, consider replacing it.
Check the Tyres: Low pressure can cause the mower to lean, resulting in an uneven cut. Check the tyre pressure regularly and inflate them to the manufacturer’s recommended levels.
Keep it Covered: When not in use, store your mower in a dry, sheltered place, such as a garage or shed. If indoor storage isn’t an option, invest in a quality cover to shield the mower from rain, sun, and debris.
The amount of time you spend using your ride-on mower also plays a significant role in determining how often it should be serviced.
If you’re using your mower heavily—such as for commercial purposes or mowing large properties—you may need to service it more frequently than the standard once-a-year recommendation. A good rule of thumb is to service the mower every 50 hours of use. This could mean more than one service per year if you’re mowing regularly during the growing season.
For residential users who mow once a week or less, an annual service may be sufficient. However, if you notice any of the warning signs mentioned below or if the mower feels sluggish, it’s a good idea to have it checked out sooner.
Some ride-on mowers come equipped with an hour meter, which makes it easier to keep track of how long you’ve used the mower. If your mower doesn’t have an hour meter, try to estimate based on how often you mow and for how long each time.
Even with regular maintenance, there are times when your mower may need professional attention. Here are five signs that it’s time to schedule a service:
Reduced Performance: If your mower isn’t cutting as effectively as it used to, or if the engine seems to be working harder than normal, it could be a sign of dull blades, a clogged air filter, or other mechanical issues.
Strange Noises: Unusual sounds from the engine, belts, or blades should never be ignored. These noises could indicate a variety of issues, such as loose parts, worn bearings, or engine problems.
Difficulty Starting: If your mower is becoming harder to start, or impossible to start, it could be due to several factors, such as a worn spark plug, old fuel, or a failing battery. Consistent difficulty starting is a strong sign that the mower needs professional servicing to diagnose and fix the underlying issue.
Smoke: Smoke coming from the exhaust is never a good sign. Blue smoke can indicate that the engine is burning oil, while white smoke might mean there’s a coolant leak or water in the fuel. Any type of smoke should be addressed immediately to avoid further damage.
Unusual Vibrations: Excessive or unusual vibrations can signal a problem with the blades, deck alignment, or the drive system.
